Martinique is a Caribbean island. Once a French colony, it is now part of France. Fresh baguettes!! Woo-hoo!!

The first Westerner who saw Martinique was Christopher Columbus, who took one look and left as soon as possible. It was probably the smoking volcano, Mont Pelée, that might have had something to do with it. And that thing is still smoking. In fact, the whole island is basically remnants of that volcano or others. The French came and actually fought with Great Britain and the Netherlands over the island because it seemed to be a good idea at the time. So now France got its very own volcano, while the disappointed Netherlands now has to depend on Mentos and Diet Coke for anything similar.

Tourists from big cities could probably stay home and Breathe the equivalent of deadly volcanic fumes any day of the week. However the lure of jaunty paper umbrellas in goofy rum drinks is too strong to keep them at home.
