The Convair 240 was basically an updated version of the aging DC-3 used by airlines from the 1930s onward.

Paid passengers and stowaways complained not only of the DC-3's unpressurized cabin but of loud noise produced by air whistling through bullet holes in DC-3s converted from military aircraft. Thus the Convair 240 was equipped with bicycle pumps so passengers could select their own pressurization. However, air travel tradition was still maintained as all passengers and their luggage needed to parachute out of the 240 when it approached an airport.
