The left bracket (American:left parenthesis) is a character of pure wickedness.
Like Shakespeare's Richard III, it is hunchbacked, a sure sign of foul intentions and unspeakable evil. This is further confirmed by being a major part of a frownie face. Though usually approaching a word from the left in a furtive manner, this is merely done to distract the word until it is trapped by the right bracket. Then that word is trapped forever, with both brackets perhaps letting out a heart BWAHAHAHAHA! if their tiny voices could be heard by the human ear.
In America, these evil characters are apparently used in the arcane art of NCAA basketball bracketology, a pagan springtime ritual there. It can only be hoped that this vile practice will not spread to the United Kingdom or its gullible slave Canada.
